Freelancer notification and updates

What is this notification for?

You need to tell us if you are practising on your own under regulation 10.2(a) or (b) of the SRA Authorisation of Individuals Regulations (AoI).

Read our guidance on preparing to become a sole practitioner or an SRA-regulated freelance solicitor first and check whether you are eligible to operate under regulation 10.2 AoI.

You also need to tell us if the work you do under regulation 10.2 changes, for example, if you change from doing only non-reserved legal services to doing reserved ones.

What you need to tell us

The 'Freelancer notification' form allows you to tell us whether you intend to deliver reserved or unreserved legal services. You will need to answer some questions so that we can check you meet the criteria set out in the regulations.

If you have previously notified us that you are practising under regulation 10.2(a) or (b) and need to tell us of a change to your work or arrangements, please use the 'Freelancer update notification' and submit that via mySRA.

Money laundering regulations

If you will do work under The Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing and Transfer of Funds (Information on the Payer) Regulations 2017 (MLR), you will need to tell us about the type of work you do. We will need to approve you under the MLR. If you are not sure if you are subject to these regulations, or what additional requirements apply to your practice, please read our guidance.

For those telling us they are practising under regulation 10.2 for the first time, questions about the MLR are included in the form.

If you have previously notified us that you are practising under regulation 10.2 and need to inform us you are starting work under the MLR, you need to 'Apply for money laundering authorisation'.

If you already have money laundering authorisation but need to tell us about changes to that, you need to 'Make changes to your anti-money laundering authorisation'.

No longer providing legal services under regulation 10.2

You need to end your 'freelancer' post in mySRA if you cease to provide legal services under regulation 10.2.
