Warning: Letter misusing the name and letterhead of Setfords Law Ltd

A letter has been sent to His Majesty's Land Registry misusing the name and letterhead of the genuine firm of solicitors Setfords Law Ltd.

What is the scam?

The SRA has been informed that correspondence has been sent to HM Land Registry purporting to be from Marcus Blick of Setfords Law Ltd (see genuine details below).

The letter seen by the SRA misuses the letterhead of the genuine firm of solicitors and the firm's genuine name, head office address, telephone number, email address and website address. The contents of the letter relate to confirmation that the provisions of certain clauses of a transfer of title have been complied with.

Any business or transaction through the letter described above is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Setfords Law Ltd, which also trades as Setfords Solicitors and Setfords. The genuine firm's head office address is 74 North Street, Guildford, GU1 4AW and the contact number for their head office is '0330 058 4012'. The firm’s website address is 'www.setfords.co.uk'.

The SRA also previously authorised and regulated a solicitor called Marcus Fred Blick, whose SRA number is 119871. Marcus Fred Blick does not currently hold a practicing certificate and is not employed by the genuine firm of solicitors Setfords Law Ltd in any capacity. Marcus Fred Blick was previously employed by Setfords Law Ltd as a Consultant, however, his employment at the firm ended on 2 January 2024.

The genuine firm of solicitors have confirmed that they have no connection to the letter referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
