Warning: Bogus website and correspondence claiming to be a law firm called 'Hackney, Goode & Associates'

A bogus website 'www.hackneygoode.co.uk' is operating and falsely claiming to be a law firm called 'Hackney, Goode & Associates'.

What is the scam?

The SRA has been advised that a bogus website is operating at 'www.hackneygoode.co.uk' claiming to be for a law firm offering various 'legal services'.

The bogus website purports that the firm specialises in providing 'personal injury claims, settlements, civil litigation, family law, employment law and property law' services. The contact details provided on the bogus website is an office address '28 Lawrence Rd, London, N15 4EG', email addresses 'info@hackneygoode.com', 'help@hackneygoode.com', 'report@hackneygoode.com' and telephone number '+44 114463 0023'.

The SRA has also seen correspondence sent to a member of the public from ‘Catherine Goode’ purporting to be the 'Managing Partner' from 'Hackney, Goode & Associates'.

The correspondence purports to confirm 'eligibility for entry into a settlement fund administered by The Burnley Magistrates Court Resolution Claims Department', offering assistance to 'secure the settlement'. The correspondence has a bogus logo and the contact details provided is a telephone number '+44 207 046 0086' and email address 'cgoode@hackneygoode.com'.

The SRA does not authorise or regulate a firm of solicitors called 'Hackney, Goode & Associates’ or an individual with the name 'Catherine Goode'.

Any business or transaction through the above website, contact details, firm and individual is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised or regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA does not authorise or regulate a genuine firm of solicitors called 'Hackney, Goode & Associates' or any genuine solicitor called 'Catherine Goode'.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
